Professor David Sines CBE

David was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Nursing of the United Kingdom in 1989 for his pioneering work in advancing the art and science of nursing and community care. He was awarded the C.B.E. in the 2010 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for ‘Services to Health Care’.

David Sines is currently Pro Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean and Professor of Community Health Care Nursing at the Faculty of Society and Health at Bucks New University. He was previously the Executive Dean for the Faculty of Health & Social Care at London South Bank University. During his career David has had responsibility for the delivery of health and social care related education to a range of prestigious hospitals and community services including: Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital; University College Hospital; King’s College Hospital, Guys & St Thomas’ Hospitals; The Maudsley Hospital; Whipps Cross University Hospital, Barking, Havering & Redbridge NHS Hospitals Trust and nine Primary Care Trusts.

He is a member of the NHS London Workforce Advisory Board and has managed education for nurses, health visitors, midwives, general practitioners, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiographers, radiotherapists and social workers.

He was Head of School of Health Sciences at the University of Ulster for nine years during the 1990s. David’s professional career has encompassed a range of senior managerial roles in the Health Service ranging from Community Nursing Officer in south London to Unit General Manager and Director of Nursing and Operational Services in Winchester, until his move to Northern Ireland in 1990.

David obtained his PhD in social policy from the University of Southampton. He has held four Secretary of State positions in England and Wales and was a Nursing Member for England for the Nursing & Midwifery Council until 2006 and a member of the previous UKCC for a period of ten years.

David was latterly Chair of the NMC UK Standards Committee and is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing and a member of the Higher Education Academy. He was recently a Governor at King’s College Hospital, London Foundation Trust and of Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust Members Council. He is a Director of the British School of Osteopathy. He is a prolific author and his research has been included in the last four UK Research Assessment Exercises. He advises the Department of Health on clinical workforce issues.

David moved to Buckinghamshire New University in August 2009 to assume responsibility for the academic leadership of the Faculty of Society of Health and to lead the University’s new health campus in Uxbridge. He holds an Honorary Appointment with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust as Associate Director of Nursing. David is a member of the North West London Health and Innovation Education Cluster Partnership Board.
